January Club News & Competition Reports by Mr. Peter Byrne, Club Captain & PRO

January 31st 2010 - Stableford Competition

An early morning frost delayed play at the Course on Saturday ,but thankfully the " the bit of an auld stretch in the evenings !" meant the late starters still had daylight at the finish.

Play got under way at half ten and in the first group out Sean Furlong ( 14)  ,in His 1st competition of the year, amassed an excellent 40pts . However with Winter rules in operation and with absolutely perfect conditions scoring for the day proved out of the ordinary Pat Madsen (15)  certainly made hay while the sun shone and on a course in tip top condition came home with a remarkable 42 pts for  1st place .

A group of players had  39 pts and Gavin Doyle took 3 rd spot on countback . Well done to all and special mentions in dispatches for Sammy Walker (10) whose 38pts must have been a slight disappointment  after his heroics of the last  2 weeks !  , and Commitee member David Murphy (7) who played super golf with 3 birdies and 8 pars for a creditable 36 pts .

Next Sunday sees another Stabeford competition and hopefully an even bigger turn out than this week .  A  list of open competitions should be finalised in the coming weeks

January 24th 2010 - Stableford Competition

A Stableford competition was played on Sunday. Surprisingly the frost took longer than expected to clear and so  the  course did not open till after 11 00. This was the most likely  reason for a low turn out , although the players who did take to the course enjoyed perfect conditions with some players even spotted in shirt sleeves for a time !

For the second week in a row Sammy Walker, playing off his new handicap of 9.5 for the first time , racked up an outstanding score .  Last weeks 40 pts was improved by 2 for a winning score of 42  . Sammy was in the last group out and by all accounts but for a few missed short putts his score would have been even more impressive.  Handicap Secratary Andrew Byrne (19)  held out for second place with a very good 36 pts  and that other regular visitor to the podium Brian Delaney (11)  held off a group of players for third place with  34 pts.   If Mr Walker keeps up this form the handicap commitee will have to take another look at him !

Next Saturday 30 th Jan sees another Stableford competition with hopefully a bigger field taking part and incidentally a full list of all upcoming competitions is on display in club house
